WhatsApp API Conversation Rules

You cannot initiate conversations freely. You must either use approved Message Templates to start a conversation, or reply within 24 hours after a customer messages you first.

24-Hour Messaging Window

You can only send free-form messages (text, media, interactive) to users who have messaged you within the last 24 hours. For new conversations, use Message Templates.

Message Templates

Select an approved template from your WhatsApp Business Account. Templates are required to initiate conversations.

Template Guidelines

  • Templates must be approved by Meta before use (takes 24-48 hours)
  • Use variables like {{1}}, {{2}} for dynamic content
  • Header: 60 characters max | Body: 1024 characters max | Footer: 60 characters max
  • Button text: 20 characters max

Eligibility Requirements:
Groups API requires: (1) 100K+ messaging limit tier, (2) Official Business Account (OBA) status.

Invite Link Template

After creating a group, you'll get an invite link. To send this link to users, you need an approved template with the GROUP_INVITE category.

Template Example:
"Hi {{1}}! You're invited to join our exclusive group: {{2}}"
Button type: URL with {{1}} placeholder for the invite link

Important Rules for Bulk Messaging:
  • Recipients must have opted-in to receive messages
  • Use approved templates for messages outside 24h window
  • Respect your messaging tier limit (1K/10K/100K/day)
  • Spam or unsolicited messages can get your number banned
Template Broadcast

Send approved template messages to multiple recipients. Best for marketing, notifications, and re-engagement.

Enter phone numbers in international format without + sign. One per line or comma-separated.
CSV should have phone numbers in first column
Min 50ms, recommended 100-500ms
Leave empty if template has no variables

Setup Instructions
  1. Go to Meta Developer Console
  2. Select your app → WhatsApp → Configuration
  3. Under Webhook, click Edit
  4. Enter Callback URL: https://wb.somait.ac.tz/webhook
  5. Enter Verify Token: somait_whatsapp_2024
  6. Click Verify and Save
  7. Subscribe to: messages, message_status
